Story of MOMOTANI

The origin of Monotani Juntenkan

Masajiro Momotani the founder of the Momotanu Juntenkan, was born in the medical merchant "Maskiya" who has been serving the Tokugawa dynasty of the Kishu region (present-day Wakayama Prefecture) since the Keicho Period (1615-1624).

In 1885, Masajiro Momotani invented "Bigansui" lotion for his lovely wife suffering from acne. Later on, it became popular by word of mouth all over Japan and created a precedent for the cosmetics business. In its long history, it is trusted, proud of its achievements, and has established an unshakable solid bond with its customers for a long time. "BIGANSUI" Acne Lotion" created by Masajiro Momotani for his wife who suffered from acne, was released.

Momotani Juntenkan was established in Kokawa 9Wakayama Prefecture) by Masajiro

1902

"BIGANSUI Beauty Lotion" was launched

1913

A cosmetics testing lab was established ahead of the development of the industry

"BIGAN Soap" was released in alliance with UK-based Lever Brothers, Inc (the predecessor to the current Unilever).

1914

The company had the honor of supplying cosmetics products to the Japanese Imperial Family.

1918

Suifu Kishimoto, one of Japan's most renowned Senyru (satirical haiku)poets, joined the Company's advertising department.

1922

The company's research Laboratory, factory, and sales office were relocated to Osaka, which served as the headquarters

The company had the honor of supplying the BIGAN cosmetics series to the Japanese Emperor.

1927

Masajiro Momtani was awarded the Legion d'' Honneur by the French Government for his significant contribution to promoting the cosmetics industry.

1928

Masajiro Momotani was awarded the Medal with Green Ribbon and the Medal with Dark Blue Ribbon by the Japanese government for his contribution to the cosmetics industry and society at large.

1932

Masayoshi Ohira (Later Prime Minister of Japan) joined Momotani Juntekan.

"Meishoku Cleansing Cream" was launched, marketing the start of Meishoku Brand.

1936

"Meishoku Astringent Lotion" featuring a biffer effect, was launched. (Later its process was granted a patent).

1959

Actresses Kyoko Kagawa and Ruriko Asaoka'ere used for advertising for women's cosmetics. For men's cosmetics, baseball player Shigeo Nagashima, actor Yujiro Ishihara, and Professional wrestler Rikidozan were used.

1953

Ito Kinuko, Miss Universe Japan and known as a beauty with a well-balanced figure was used for the Company's advertising.

1962

As an exclusive agency in Japan, the company concluded a technology/ manufacturing tie-up with 4711, a world-renowned German Company for Eau de Cologne.

1963

"Jeunesse Enzyme Lotion" (medicated), patented in France and Japan, was launched.

1964

The placenta-essence skincare product "Tarvena Cream" was launched with a technological alliance with German pharmaceutical company H.C. Starck.

1976

Actress Sayuri Yoshinaga was used for advertising the Mishoku Gold series as its image model.

1993

Shifted to group management by newly establishing three companies depending on the type of distribution channels.

1996

Siichiro Momotani (current President) became Representative Director and President of Momtani Juntekan.

Okayama Factory was constructed.

2005

An aesthetic salon opened

2016

The headquarters were relocated to Chu-ku from Minato-ku in Osaka. (A new head office building was constructed).

2019

"BIGANSUI Acne Lotion" was certified as A chemical heritage Authorized by the Chemical Society of Japan.

2021

"Happiness Beaute" SDGs products with Hala certification were launched.
